The title of this series originates from the dichotomy of the ultra-rare Nike Moon Shoe coveted by adult sneakerheads and the mass produced Moon Shoes from Nickelodeon coveted by kids of the 90’s. Both of these shoes promote ideas about launching off the earth, either from an Olympic starting line or an uneven chalk dusted sidewalk. Moon Shoes is a body of work that uses contemporary shoe marketing techniques and promises as inspiration for still life compositions. Brands like Adidas and Nike coin terms like Ultra Boost and Air – always positioning the wearer skyward. I’m equally inspired by the utility of shoes, who has worn them, why? and for how long? Using fire, light and smoke I’m interested in depicting the transcendent moments we’re promised, and that we do inevitably experience.
